Lady Indians storm back to beat Rabun Gap
Playing in front of the home crowd, TFS rallied to a 3-2 victory against the rivals
In an instant classic, the Lady Indians rallied from being down 2-0 to secure a 3-2 win over Rabun Gap in the home opener. According to coach Matt Heyl, it was extra sweet as it's the first win over Gap in over two years.
"Margalida [Amengual Sanchez] did a great job making magic with passes that we had," says Heyl. "In that third set, Becca [Heyl] started serving, and others got on board and got aggressive. Sofia [Livianos] didn't get down after a slow start, and just kept swinging. I'm really proud of the girls fighting back."
The opening two sets went to Rabun Gap, as TFS was on the short end at 21-25, 19-25. Becca Heyl had some key aces throughout the first two sets, and the girls had some nice blocks up front as well. In the third set, Tallulah Falls began the comeback with a 25-22 win. Corinne Swinton, Heyl, Shelby Whisnant, and others had some big kills. Whisnant added what was a crucial block and had the kill to end the set.
The fourth set went to TFS, 25-22 again the score. Swinton's block early set the tone, and her kill ended the set to knot the match at two apiece. In between, Swinton and Whisnant recorded aces, and Livianos had several monster kills. Lily Smith was also pivotal to the comeback. The home crowd sensed the shift in momentum, and the Lady Indians rode that to a 15-8 final set. That last set saw Tallulah take a huge 10-2 lead, and Amengual Sanchez delivered multiple aces, including back-to-back to open the final frame. Laura Ruiz Rendon had a very good performance also.
Livianos recorded double-digit kills, and the thrilling comeback required a full team effort. Tallulah Falls runs its overall record to 4-2 on the season, and returns to action Thursday at Stephens County.
